about Software

SWAP software is a collection of open-source packages operating on the Pebble distribution of Linux. Packages of particular imporantance include:

  • Aladin - A package from the Southhampton Open Wireless Network that facilitates the dynamic assignment of IP addresses when wireless links are created.
  • HostAP - Software to provide drivers for the Prism II wireless chipset family. HostAP supports WDS links between nodes which are crutial to SWAP.
  • Iptables - A Linux firewall providing network address translation, port forwarding and a host of other security features.
  • Quagga - A collection of routing protocols including (among others) support for OSPF which is used by SWAP.

We have packaged the SWAP software into distributions that can be downloaded for installation onto a compact flash card (from which the single hardware boots).

You can find the packages under the "distributions" link, and instructions on how to install them under the "install" link - both on the left.

Modifications to the standard software:

For those that are interested, several modifications were made to the standard Pebble Linux distribution:

  • Added the Aladin linking package from Southhampton Open Wireless Network http://sown.org.uk
  • Upgraded kernel, compiled with support for dummy network interfaces
  • Removed Zebra packages, replaced with fork Quagga, which seems to have a less buggy implementation of OSPF.
  • Added the iptools package.
  • Disabled the NoCatAuth? package, as it interferes with our firewall rules.

Wireless card firmware upgrade:

There is also an upgrade to the wireless card firmware required to support WDS links. Detailed instructions on how to do this can be found on our Firmware Upgrade page.
